Best Time to Surf San Cristobal: A Month-by-Month Guide

Best Time to Surf San Cristobal: A Month-by-Month Guide.Unlike a lot of surf destinations, San Cristóbal doesn’t have one single “best” season. It has two, and which one matters depends entirely on which break you’re chasing.

Warm Season: December to April

This period brings northern swells driven by seasonal current shifts, which is when Punta Carola and El Cañón fire most consistently. Water is warmer too, so a lighter wetsuit or even boardshorts work fine for most sessions during these months.

Cool Season: May to November

During this stretch, the Humboldt Current shifts conditions in favor of the island’s south-facing breaks, particularly El Tongo. Waves here tend to be steadier and more predictable, though water temperature drops enough that a full wetsuit is worth having.

Which Spots Work Best Which Months

  • Punta Carola: Year-round, strongest December–April
  • La Lobería: Consistent year-round, beginner-friendly in any season
  • El Tongo: Best April–November
  • El Cañón: Strongest December–April, similar to Punta Carola
  • Manglecito & Punta Pitt: Best in December, when offshore reef breaks align

Is There a Bad Month?

Not really. Because San Cristóbal’s breaks favor opposite seasons, there’s almost always a rideable option somewhere on the island regardless of when you visit. The real planning question isn’t “when should I go,” but “which spot should I prioritize based on when I’m going.”

Booking Around the Season

If a specific break is your priority, tell your guide before booking so they can plan sessions around the swell window that suits it best, rather than defaulting to whichever spot is most convenient that day.
