Surfing in San Cristobal- Tongo Reef- Velero Avanzado | Galapagos Surf Tour.Tucked along the sheltered bay of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno lies Tongo Reef, an elite left-hand point break deeply tied to the maritime heritage of San Cristóbal Island.

Local history recalls that during the mid-20th century, a foreign sailboat (el velero) was caught off-guard by a sudden drop in tide and an unexpected swell angle, grounding itself directly onto the shallow volcanic reef.

The wreckage remained exposed for years, serving as a landmark for local fishermen and early surf pioneers who began riding the powerful wave breaking right alongside the ship.

The outer section of the reef was thus baptized ‘El Velero,’ while the main inner break took the name ‘Tongo Reef.’ Known for its long, high-speed left-hand walls that roll across two distinct reef sections, Tongo Reef offers an incredible performance canvas where history, marine life, and world-class Galápagos surfing meet.”

📜 Historical Background & Local Lore

The history of Velero  is a true, verified account passed down through generations, eventually giving this legendary location its name. This historical information was preserved thanks to Local Guide and Fisherman  Gordo Lucho, originary from Puerto Ayora how dedicate a loot time of San Cristóbal Island, He living in his own sailboat in Canal Iataba lonely with his dog.

A Local Anecdote from Gordo Lucho

“The best day of my life: I left Santa Cruz from Puerto Ayora at 4:00 AM without permission from the Captaincy and without a navigation permit. It was just me and my dog, and our mission was to reach San Cristóbal by 7:30 AM local time.

Once we passed Santa Fe, the ocean became extremely rough. I felt a south wind blowing so hard it felt like it was going to tear off my skin. I held my dog tightly and said, ‘Today is not our day to die, hold on tight!’ Without navigation lights and relying purely on raw sight, we made it to San Cristóbal.”

  • Reef Hazards: The inner section of Tongo Reef gets shallow on low tides. Surfers must follow guide instructions for kick-outs and channel exits to avoid volcanic rock contact.
